SA 10km Record Holder (27:38) and SA Half Marathon Record Holder, Stephen Mokoka is ready to challenge at the 2019 FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN on Sunday 13 October 2019.
No one can deny that Mokoka is in the best shape of his life. After running his 5thbest ever half marathon time in July to win the national title (60:57), Mokoka, a month later, became only the second South African to break 60 minutes when he ran 59:50 in Buenos Aires. His time will become the new SA Record as the times of 59:20 and 59:40 of Hendrick Ramaala were run on an aided course.
“That race (referring to the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN) always brings fast athletes to South Africa and is one of the reasons why I like racing in Durban,” said Mokoka. “The FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN is 8 days after my marathon in Doha (World Championships), but because of the conditions in Doha, I am not expecting a fast race. So I know I will be ready for Durban.”
Mokoka is a regular in the FNB Run Your City Series and relishes the competition provided. “It is a great thing that Stillwater Sports is doing. Three big races in a year, good prize money, good competition and we do not need to travel to Europe or elsewhere. That can only be good for us here in South Africa and makes planning your season a lot easier.”
Mokoka has raced the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN since inception in 2017 finishing 4thand 6thin 2017 and 2018 respectively. On both occasions, Mokoka was the first South African across the finish line. His time of 28:18 in 2018 was also his 4thbest time ever over the 10km.
Mokoka clearly relishes competing against top international competition. In Buenos Aires Mokoka ran a 5km PB in the Half Marathon (13:54) and a Seasons Best in the 10km (28:08 – also his second fastest time ever). So the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN falls right in with his objectives of racing against top competition – only now it is on home soil. “It makes a difference when you run at home. You get this extra feeling of pride to be racing amongst the best in the world here in South Africa.”
Mokoka is acutely aware of how the level of running has improved since the FNB Run Your City Series started with its first event in May 2015 with the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN. “The guys are hungrier. They know that we are well looked after and that if they have a good run here they could get an invitation to race overseas. So this has all helped with raising the standard of running in South Africa.”

The course in Durban is ideal for fast times and is the perfect opportunity for South Africa’s leading athletes to improve on their bests. Add to that mix a deep international field and you have the makings of yet another impressive race.
The FNB Run Your City Series consists of three events:  the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN(5thanniversary in 2019), FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN(4thanniversary in 2019) and FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN(3rdanniversary in 2019).  Exhilarating mass participation road races, each event celebrates the splendour of its host city.  Runners (and walkers) will be treated to a journey that will highlight iconic landmarks and feature lively performances on route.

Over the short period of 5 years, the series has grown to over 40 000 runners in the three cities and has attained IAAF Bronze Label Status in two events.   The Durban race is now chasing Gold Label Status. The significance of that cannot be underestimated. Label Status means that the FNB Run Your City Series will attract some of the best athletes in the world, which means that South Africa’s top athletes get to race the best on home soil. As a result fast times will be recorded on the African Continent.
Over the past 5 years the series has delivered compelling racing and fast times which will now be shared with the world through the process of a Livestream. The FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN will be livestreamed as was the Cape Town leg of the FNB Run Your City Series.
